MARIETAS ISLANDS Marietas Islands , located 22 miles to the north of Puerto Vallarta , offers extensive reef systems accessible only by boat. The islands are the perfect site for shallow, coral reef bottoms and tropical life. Jacques Yves Cousteau closely chronicled the islands because of the vast underwater life. Thousands upon thousands of tropical species surround the reef, but the big attraction is the opportunity to spot huge pacific manta rays.
EL MORRO This site is populated by an incredible number of migratory and non migratory fish. Commonly seen are Moorish Idols, Leather Bass, Golden Eye Grunts, Razor Surgeons, Harlequin Wrasse, The great Pacific Manta, Sailfish, Dolphins, Turtles, large schools of Jacks and occasionally whale sharks
CHIMO & LAS IGLESIAS Las Torrecillas is an underwater mesa-like structure, about ¼ miles in diameter. From this plateau, pinnacles rise toward the surface like the trunks of fossilized trees. Secondly there is the immaculate presence of what is locally called "Las Iglesias", the churches.
The churches are rock, coral-coated dormant lava tubes that extend from the ocean floor some 35 – 40 feet towards the surface. Their presence is almost supernatural. Because of the abundance of untouched, brilliant coral, the area is teeming with reef life all year long. With giant mantas and huge 150 pound Vallarta Tuna being favorite visitors in the winter months. |
