     Sardine Run Adventure

Scuba Diving in Durban (South Africa) with Active Adventures

Diving in the Sardine Migration is probably the best ever diving you will do, it even deserves capital letters! This holiday cannot be described in words it is simply breathtaking and an overload of amazing sights and experiences. One of the best explanations is the quote below.

Have a look below at the schedule yourself! It is awesome. Remember this is a specialist expedition. Everyday our aim is to see our big friends.

Although the trip is called the sardine run, the idea of this trip is to see the whales, sharks, dolphins and other life. The sardine run's timing change each year, but always happens in june or july. It lasts for about 4-6 weeks, but the surrounding weeks still bring in all the big animals.

This is one of nature’s most spectacular displays & being involved in all the action is truly an amazing experience. The shoals of sardines, which are kilometers in length, attract thousands of predators: birds, dolphins, game fish, seals, whales and sharks in an amazing feeding frenzy.

For every trip here we GUARANTEE that you will see sharks and dolphins or we give you all your diving for free!

   Itinerary & Highlights

Day 1 - Arrive Durban -- Transfer Port St. Johns -- Overnight Port St. Johns.
Your adventure begins when you arrive at Durban International Airport. You will be met by Craig and Dave and transferred [about 5-hours] to our accommodation, situated on the river banks at Port St. Johns. The upmarket log-cabins overlook the river and have en-suite facilities. In the evening we enjoy a BBQ [known locally as a braai] where you will get to know the group and your guide.

Day 2 - Full Day Sardine Run Action -- Overnight Port St. Johns.
We receive updates about the Sardine Run movements, launch the RIB close to the action and the chase begins! We spend the day out at sea, enthralled by the action above and below the water, getting up close and personal with many of the oceans creatures. Again, because of the speed at which the shoals travel and the dynamic nature of the following predators, we often spend most of our time in the water free diving resorting to scuba when conditions are optimal. Throughout the day the water erupts with bait balls created by the passing predators and we get the chance to see it all. In the afternoon we return to shore to relax or enjoy the local activities. Overnight Port St. Johns, South Africa.
