Itinerary / Highlights

DAY 1 - 5, Cheetah breeding project, Kruger National Park, Johannesburg
From Johannesburg we travel east into the Mpumalanga and visit a cheetah rehabilitation centre. The next day we entre Kruger National Park in open game drive vehicles. Covering an enormous area Kruger is home to over 500 species of birds, some 150 species of mammals (including the 'Big Five': elephant, rhino, lion, leopard and buffalo). We make our way back to Johannesburg where we have a day full to relax, or (optionally) visit Soweto, the Lion Park or take tour of the Gold Reef mining areas.

DAY 6 - 10, Lesotho, Drakensberg Mountains, Royal Natal National Park, Battlefields
We leave Johannesburg and head south to the mountainous Kingdom of Lesotho. In deeply rural surroundings we explore local villages, meet the Basotho people and experience something of the life of these traditional folk. After two nights we cross back into South Africa and explore the beauty of the Drakensberg Mountains and Royal National Park by foot and a nature drive. We then continue to Dundee the gate-way to the battlefield sites dating from colonial wars involving the Zulu and the British and Afrikaaner settlers - Blood River, Talana Hill, Rorke's Drift.

DAY 11 - 14, Durban, Wild Coast
On our last day we travel through the 'Valley of a 1000 Hills', experiencing Zulu culture before hitting the coast and the bright lights of Durban. We next travel through the rugged Wild Coast. We have two nights in the charming town of Cintsa, to enjoy beautiful beaches and unspoilt coastline. Various optional activities are available.

DAY 15 - 17, Addo Elephant National Park, Tsitsikamma National park, Knysna
Addo Elephant National Park marks the start of our Garden Route journey. The park is sanctuary for cape buffalo, black rhino, antelope and elephant, much of which we hope to see on an a game drive. Further along the coast we take a walk and enjoy the unique Tsitsikamma National Park where steep hardwood forests meet rugged coastline and pounding Indian Ocean. Take the opportunity to try the highest bungy jump in the world (if you dare!), before we spend two nights in the picturesque town of Knysna.

DAY 18 - 19, Hermanus, Cape Vineyard, Cape Town
We continue along the coast to Hermanus, the town is known particularly for whale watching, often possible from shore, and for viewing dolphins, in season. The Western Cape area is famous for its vineyards and today we visit a winery and have the opportunity to sample (and buy) the products! After a pleasant few hours we continue into cosmopolitan Cape Town, one of the world's most picturesque cities, where our tour ends.
